The Forty-Ninth Notebook

The sage’s heart is free of self;
in the vastness of Fundamental Nature, it abides with Being,
as a valley receives the rain.

Thus, the hearts of the people are his heart;
he treats the pure and the impure with kindness;
toward the truthful and the untruthful, he acts with integrity.

The sage sees not with divided vision;
in the One, he sees the Fundamental Nature of all people.

The sage is gentle and unadorned in the world;
his heart is joined with the heart of the world.

Thus, the people entrust their eyes and ears to him;
and he treats them as pure-hearted children.Translation by AI
