ریشه، هستی را پدید آورد؛
سرشتِ راستین، آن‌را پرورش داد؛
جهان، آن را صورت بخشید و به کمال رسانید.

از این‌رو، آفریدگان
راه را بزرگ
و سرشتِ بنیادین را ارجمند می‌شمارند؛
نه از بیم و نه از فرمان، که از نهادِ خویش.

پس، راه پدید می‌آورد،
اما از آنِ خود نمی‌سازد؛
سرشت می‌بالاند،
اما بر خویشتن نمی‌نازد.

می‌آفرینند و می‌پرورانند،
اما فرمان نمی‌رانند؛
و این است رازِ نهانِ سرشت.

The Fifty-First Notebook

The Root brought Being into existence;
Fundamental Nature nurtured it;
the world gave it form and brought it to fulfillment.

Therefore, all beings
hold the Way in high esteem
and honor Fundamental Nature;
not out of fear, nor by command,
but by their own nature.

Thus, the Way brings forth,
yet does not make anything its own;
Nature nurtures and brings forth,
yet does not take pride in itself.

They bring forth and nurture,
yet do not rule;
and this is the hidden mystery of Nature.
