The Fifty-Third Notebook
If my Fundamental Nature becomes radiant,
I shall find the Way;
yet I remain fearful of the rebellion
of the unruly self.
Fundamental Nature
is closer to me than the veins in my neck;
yet through the windows of the senses,
I am cast toward distant and rugged paths.
The people’s fields lie barren and withered,
and the nation’s granaries stand empty and dust-covered;
while the palaces of the statesmen are splendid and adorned,
their robes bright with color,
their sharp swords drawn;
their treasures heaped with wealth and possessions,
their bellies filled with food and drink.
This is the brigandage of the boastful,
who have bound Fundamental Nature in chains
and enthroned the unruly self.
This is not the Way of the Dao!
