کشور با راستی و درست‌کاری، به‌سامان می‌رسد؛
جنگ با شگرد و نیرنگ، به‌پیش می‌رود؛
اما، جهان با بی‌کرداری، گشوده می‌شود.

این را از کجا دانستم؟
هرچه کن و مکن‌ها پرشمارتر؛ مردمان نادار‌تر؛
و راهزنان و دزدان بیشتر.

هرچه جنگ‌افزارها فراوان‌تر، کشورها بی‌سامان‌تر؛
هرچه شگردها دلکش‌تر, مردمان هوس‌بازتر.

پس؛ فرزانه می‌گوید:
چون بی‌کنش باشم، مردمان خودبه‌خود درست می‌شوند؛
چون آرام باشم، مردمان خودبه‌خود راست می‌گردند؛
چون دست در کارها نبرم، مردمان خودبه‌خود توانگر و دارا می‌شوند؛
و چون بی‌خواهش باشم، مردمان خودبه‌خود ساده و بی‌آلایش می‌مانند.

The Fifty-Seventh Notebook

A nation is brought into order through truth and integrity;
war advances through strategy and cunning;
yet the world is opened through non-interference.

How do I know this?
The more numerous the do’s and don’ts,
the poorer the people;
and the more thieves and bandits there are.

The more abundant the weapons,
the more disordered the nations;
the more alluring the stratagems,
the more desirous and fashion-driven the people become.

Thus the sage says:
When I remain non-acting, the people transform themselves;
when I remain tranquil, the people straighten themselves;
when I do not interfere in their affairs,
the people enrich themselves and become prosperous;
and when I am without want and without desire,
the people remain simple and unadorned.
