گرداندنِ کشورِ بزرگ،
بسانِ پختن ماهیِ خُرد است؛
به کم‌ترین کنش نیاز دارد.

چون با سرشتِ راستین*، فرمان رانده شود،
نفسِ بدکنش** میدان‌ نمی‌یابد؛
نه آن‌که نابود گردد،
که بی‌کنش می‌ماند.

و چون هردو بی‌آزارند،
نیکیِ راستین افزون می‌شود،
و به مردمان بازمی‌گردد.

** نفسِ بدکنش: شرّ / نیروهای آسیب‌زا

The Sixtieth Notebook

To govern a great nation
is like cooking a small fish;
it requires the least possible action.

When it is governed through Fundamental Nature,*
the unruly self** finds no room to act;
not that it is destroyed,
but that it remains non-acting.

And when neither does harm to the other,
true goodness increases
and returns to the people.
