کشورِ بزرگ، به درّه‌ می‌ماند؛
رودها راهِ خود را به سوی درّه می‌دانند.

چون مادینه‌ی جهان است،
که بی‌کُنش بر نَر چیره می‌شود،
و آرام و نرم، او را در بر می‌گیرد،
پس آدمی با فروتنی بر دیگران چیره می‌شود.

کشورِ بزرگ آرزو دارد،
مردمان را گرد آورد و بپرورد؛
و کشورِ کوچک آرزو دارد،
بپیوندد و پشتیبانی شود،

آن با فروتنی می‌ستاند،
و این با افتادگی می‌پذیرد.

چون هر دو به آرزوی خویش می‌رسند،
جهان سامان می‌یابد.

The Sixty-First Notebook

A great nation is like a valley;
the rivers know their way toward the valley.

For it is the feminine of the world,
which, through non-action, prevails over the masculine,
and gently and softly embraces it;
thus, through humility, one prevails over others.

A great nation desires
to gather the people and nurture them;
a small nation desires
to join and be supported.

The former receives with humility,
and the latter accepts with modesty.

When both attain what they desire,
the world falls into harmony.
