آن‌چه آرام است، آسان داشته شود؛
آن‌چه نامده است، آسان چاره گردد؛
آن‌چه نوپا است، آسان از پا درآید؛
آن‌چه خُرد است، آسان پراکنده شود.
کار را پیش از روی‌داد، چاره کن؛
و آن را پیش از آشفتگی، به‌ سامان آور.

درختِ تناورِ امروز؛
نهالِ نازکِ دیروز است؛
کاخِ بلند؛
از کوخی پست برآمده؛
و سفرهای دور،
از گامی نزدیک آغاز می‌شود.
آن‌که به سختی می‌کوشد، کارش سخت شود؛
و آن‌که چنگ نزند، از کف ندهد.
پس فرزانه:
بی‌کنش است، و کار تباه نکند؛
بی‌آرزو است و کالای دشواریاب نجوید؛
از این‌رو با سرشتِ راستینِ مردمان، هم‌داستان،
و از نفسِ بدکنشِ آنان، گریزان است؛
اما در کارِ آنان اَندر نمی‌شود.

The Sixty-Fourth Notebook What is at peace is easily maintained; what has not yet arisen is easily resolved; what is still tender is easily brought to an end; what is small is easily scattered. Deal with things before they arise; bring them into order before disorder emerges. The mighty tree of today was yesterday’s tender sapling; the lofty palace rose from a humble hut; and distant journeys begin with a nearby step. Whoever struggles too hard makes his task difficult; and whoever does not grasp will not lose his hold. Thus the sage: is non-acting, and does not ruin what is at hand; is without desire, and does not seek what is difficult to obtain; therefore, he stands in accord with the Fundamental Nature of the people, and keeps away from their unruly self; yet does not interfere in their affairs.
