چیزِ آرام، آسان داشته شود،
چیزِ نامده، آسان به اندیشه آید،
چیزِ نوپا، آسان از پا درآید،
چیزِ خُرد، آسان پراکنده گردد.

هرچیز را پیش از روی‌داد، پیش‌بینی‌ کن،
و هرچیز را پیش از آشفتگی، به‌ سامان آور.

درختِ تناورِ امروز؛
نهالِ نازکِ دیروز است،
کاخِ بلند؛
از کوخی پست برآمده،
سفرهای دور؛
از گامی نزدیک آغاز می‌شود.

آن‌که سخت‌ می‌کوشد، سختی بیند،
آن‌که سخت بگیرد، آسان رها کند،
پس فرزانه؛
بی‌کنش می‌وَرزد، و کار تباه نکند،
به‌چنگ نیاورد، و از کف ندهد.

آن‌که پایان کار سُستی کند،
دست‌رنجش بر باد رود
از این‌ رو فرزانه،
بی‌آرزو می‌ماند،
و کالای دشواریاب نمی‌جوید.

بنابراین او با سرشتِ راستینِ مردمان، هم‌داستان،
و از نفسِ بدکنشِ آنان، گریزان است،
اما در کارِ آنان اَندر نمی‌شود.

Notebook Sixty-Four
What is still is easily held,
What has not come is easily thought,
What is fledgling is easily brought down,
What is small is easily scattered.

Before each thing arises, foresee it,
Before each confusion, bring it to order.

The mighty tree of today
Was yesterday's tender sprout,
The lofty palace
Rose from a lowly hut,
The longest journeys
Begin with a step nearby.

Who struggles hard meets hardship,
Who grips tight lets go easily.
Thus the wise one:
Cultivates non-doing, and no work is spoiled,
Grasps at nothing, and nothing is lost.

Who grows slack at the end
Sees their labor blown away like dust.
Therefore the wise one:
Abides without desire,
And seeks no rare and precious thing.
Thus he is in tune with the true nature of the people,
And keeps his distance from their ill-acting ego,
Yet does not meddle in their affairs.
