رهبرانِ فرهیخته از دیرباز می‌دانستند،
دانش‌وریِ مردمانِ بی‌سرشتِ راستین،
چون چارپایی بر او کتابی چند است.

از این رو،
در فزونیِ دانشِ آنان نکوشیدند؛
بلکه بر کاستن از نفسِ بدکُنش ایستادند،
و آنان را به سادگیِ آغازین خواندند.

که آرامش،
از مردمانِ پُر نیرنگ گریزان است؛
و دانایی،
مردمانِ پاک‌نهاد را زیبنده.

پس این دو را بشناس،
و این سنجه را میزان بدان،
که این است فرّه‌‌یِ نهان و فزونیِ کشور.

فرّه‌یِ نهان، ژرف است و دور،
وبا بدکُنِشی در وارونگی؛
تا آن‌گاه که سامانِ بزرگ پدیدار شود.

The Sixty-Fifth Notebook

The enlightened leaders of old already understood
that the learning of people devoid of Fundamental Nature
is like a beast burdened with a few books.

Therefore,
they did not strive to increase their knowledge;
rather, they devoted themselves to diminishing the unruly self,
and called them back to the simplicity of the beginning.

For tranquility
shies away from people full of cunning,
and wisdom
becomes the adornment of the pure-hearted.

Know these two, therefore,
and take this measure as your standard,
for this is the hidden radiance
and the flourishing of the nation.

The hidden radiance is deep and far-reaching,
and stands in opposition to unruliness,
until, at last, great harmony emerges.
