رهبرانِ فرهیخته از دیرباز می‌دانستند،
دانش‌وریِ مردمان، بی‌سرشتِ راستین،
چون چارپایی است که بر او کتابی چند باشد.

از این رو،
در فزونیِ دانشِ آنان نکوشیدند،
بلکه بر کاستن از نفسِ بدکُنش ایستادند،
و آنان را به سادگیِ آغازین خواندند.

پس آرامش،
از مردمانِ پر دانش گریزان است،
و دانش،
بر مردمانِ پاک‌نهاد زیبنده است.

پس این دو را بشناس،
و این سنجه را میزان بدان،
که این است فرّه‌ نهان،
و سودِ کشور.

فرّه نهان، ژرف است و دور،
وبا نفسِ بدکنش در وارونگی،
تا آن‌گاه که سامانِ بزرگ پدیدار شود.

Notebook Sixty-Five
The cultivated leaders of old knew well:
The people’s erudition, without true nature,
is like a beast of burden laden with books.

Therefore
they did not strive to increase knowledge,
but stood firm in diminishing the ill-acting self,
and called them back to primordial simplicity.

Thus peace
flees from those swollen with knowledge;
and knowledge
befits the pure of nature.

Know these two,
and take this measure as your guide:
this is the hidden grace
and the good of the realm.

Hidden grace is deep and far-reaching,
standing in reversal to the ill-acting self,
until the Great Order comes forth.
