دریاها و رودهایِ بزرگ،
از آن‌رو پادشاهِ جوی‌بارها هستند،
که در فرودست ماندن شایسته‌اند؛
و از این‌رو، شهریارِ آنان‌اند.

پس فرزانه، فرمان‌روایِ مردمان است،
چون در گفتار، فروتنی را برگزیده.
و پیشاپیشِ مردمان است،
چون در کردار، در پشتِ آنان ایستاده.

بر فرازِ مردمان جای می‌گیرد،
ولی بر آنان سنگینی نکند؛
و پیشاپیشِ آنان رود،
ولی آزارشان نرساند.

از این‌رو جهانیان با شادمانی او را فرا می‌برند،
و از او به ستوه نیایند.

و چون نمی‌ستیزد،
در جهان کسی یارایِ ستیز با او نباشد.

The Sixty-Sixth Notebook

The great rivers and seas
are sovereign over the streams and valleys
because they are willing to remain below them;
and for this reason, they rule over them.

Thus the sage becomes the ruler of the people
because, in speech, he chooses humility.
He stands before the people
because, in action, he places himself behind them.

He takes his place above the people,
yet does not weigh upon them;
he walks before them,
yet causes them no harm.

Therefore, the people of the world
gladly carry him forward
and never grow weary of him.

And because he does not contend,
no one in the world can contend with him.
