دریاها و رودهای بزرگ،
از آن‌رو پادشاهِ همه‌ی جوی‌بارها هستند،
که در فرودست بودن مهارت دارند؛
و از این‌رو فرمان‌روایِ آنان‌اند.

پس فرزانه،
از آن‌رو فرمان‌روایِ مردمان خواهد بود،
که در گفتار، خود را فروتر از آنان نهد.

و ازآن‌رو پیشاپیشِ مردمان خواهد بود،
که در کردار، خود را پسِ آنان نهد.

پس فرزانه،
چون بر فرازِ مردمان جای‌گیرد،
بر آنان سنگینی نکند؛
و چون پیشاپیشِ آنان رود،
آزارشان نرساند.

پس جهانیان با شادمانی او را برکشند،
و از او به ستوه نیایند.

و چون نمی‌ستیزد،
در جهان کسی را یارایِ ستیز با او نیست.

Notebook Sixty-Six
The great rivers and seas
are kings of all the streams
because they are skilled in dwelling low;
therefore they are rulers of them.

Thus the Sage,
if he would be ruler of the people,
in his speech places himself beneath them.

And if he would go before the people,
in his conduct he sets himself behind them.

Thus the Sage,
though he stands above the people,
does not weigh heavily upon them;
though he goes before them,
he does not cause them harm.

Therefore all under Heaven gladly raise him up
and do not grow weary of him.

And because he does not contend,
no one in the world is able to contend with him.
