سرشتِ بنیادین بزرگ است و به هیچ چیز نمی‌ماند،
اگر به چیزی می‌ماند؛
پس بزرگ نبود، که خرد و ناچیز بود،
سرشتِ بنیادین، همان سرشتِ دائو است،

سرشتِ بنیادین سه فرّه دارد:
مهربانی، که توانایی فزاید،
میانه‌روی، که توانگری بخشد،
پیشی نجستن بر مردمان، که پیشوایی آورد،
ازاین‌رو، سرشتِ بنیادین، مایه‌ی پایداری است.

نفسِ بدکنش سه تباهی دارد:
نامهربانی، که ناتوانی زاید،
زیاده‌روی، که تنگدستی فزاید،
پیشی جستن بر مردمان، که زیردستی آورد،
از این‌رو، نفسِ بدکنش، مایه‌ی ناپایداری است.

پس
مهربان، شکست ناپذیر می‌شود،
مهربان، استوار می‌شود،
مهربان، راهِ آسمان می‌شود.

Notebook Sixty-Seven
The fundamental nature is great and resembles nothing,
If it resembled anything,
It would not be great, but small and insignificant,
The fundamental nature is the very nature of the Tao.

The fundamental nature has three spiritual graces:
Compassion, from which courage grows,
Moderation, which bestows expansiveness,
Not seeking precedence over people, which brings leadership.

The ill-acting ego has three corruptions:
Unkindness, when it acts as courage,
Extravagance, when it seeks abundance,
Seeking precedence over people, when it becomes the way.

Thus
The compassionate become invincible,
The compassionate become steadfast,
The compassionate find their way to heaven.
