سرشتِ بنیادین بزرگ است و به هیچ چیز نمی‌ماند؛
اگر به چیزی می‌ماند،
پس بزرگ نبود، که خرد و ناچیز بود،
سرشتِ بنیادین، همان سرشتِ دائو است،

سرشتِ بنیادین سه فرّه دارد:
مهربانی، که توانایی فزاید؛
میانه‌روی، که توانگری بخشد؛
پیشی‌نجستن بر مردمان، که پیشوایی آورد.
از این‌رو، سرشتِ بنیادین، مایه‌ی پایداری است.

نفسِ بدکنش سه تباهی دارد:
نامهربانی، که ناتوانی زاید؛
زیاده‌روی، که تنگدستی فزاید؛
پیشی‌جستن بر مردمان، که زیردستی آورد.
از این‌رو، نفسِ بدکنش، مایه‌ی ناپایداری است.

پس مهربان، شکست ناپذیر می‌شود؛
مهربان، استوار می‌‌ماند؛
و مهربان، راهِ آسمان می‌شود.

The Sixty-Seventh Notebook

Fundamental Nature is great and resembles nothing;
if it resembled something,
then it would not be great, but small and insignificant.
Fundamental Nature is the very nature of the Dao.

Fundamental Nature has three forms of radiance:
kindness, which increases strength;
moderation, which brings abundance;
and not striving to be before others, which brings leadership.
Therefore, Fundamental Nature is the source of stability.

The unruly self has three forms of corruption:
unkindness, which gives rise to weakness;
excess, which brings poverty;
and striving to be before others, which leads to subordination.
Therefore, the unruly self is the source of instability.

Thus, the kind become unconquerable;
the kind remain steadfast;
and the kind become the Way of Heaven.
