در کارِ سپاهی‌گری، سرشتِ راستین گوید:
شیوه‌ام آفند نیست، همانا پدافند است؛
از پیشی‌جُستن در جنگ بیزارم،
و در ترکِ دشمنی پیشتازم.

این را رویاروییِ بی‌ستیزه‌جویی گویند؛
بازو درانداختن با فروتنی،
آویختن بی‌کینه،
و پدافند، هم‌راه با دائو.

در جنگ افتادن، از نفسِ بدکنش است؛
و گزندی بس بزرگ.
دشمن را نتوان زبون و بیچاره شمرد؛
مبادا فرّه‌های خود را از کف بدهی.

آن‌گاه که دو لشکرِ توانا رو در رو می‌ایستند،
آن‌که دلش اندوه‌گین‌ است،
پیروزمند است.

The Sixty-Ninth Notebook

In matters of warfare, Fundamental Nature says:
My way is not offense, but defense;
I abhor taking the initiative in war,
and I am foremost in renouncing hostility.

This is called confronting without contention;
engaging with humility,
clinging without hatred,
and defending in accord with the Dao.

To fall into war is of the unruly self,
and it is a grave harm.
One must never regard the enemy as base or helpless,
lest one lose one's own radiance.

When two powerful armies stand face to face,
the one whose heart is sorrowful
is victorious.
