در کارِ سپاهی‌گری، سرشتِ راستین گوید:
شیوه‌ام آفند نیست، همانا پدافند است؛
از پیشی جُستن در جنگ بیزارم، و در ترکِ دشمنی پیشتاز.

این را رویاروییِ بی‌ستیزه‌جویی گویند؛
بازو درانداختن، با فروتنی؛
آویختن، با دوستی؛
و پدافند، هم‌راه با دائو.

ناخواسته در جنگ افتادن، از نفسِ بدکنش است؛
سبک انگاشتنِ دشمن، گزندی بزرگ؛
و تباهیِ سرشتِ راستین.

آن‌گاه که دو لشکرِ توانا رو در رو می‌ایستند،
آن که دلش اندوهگین‌ است، پیروزمند است.

Notebook Sixty-Nine
In the art of warfare, the Righteous Nature declares:
My way is not offense, but rather defense;
I abhor seeking precedence in battle, yet I take the lead in abandoning hostility.

This is called: confrontation without contention;
Extending the arm with humility;
Engaging with friendliness;
And defense in harmony with the Tao.

To fall unwillingly into battle arises from the evil-natured self,
To regard the enemy lightly is a grave harm;
And the corruption of the Righteous Nature.

When two mighty armies stand face to face,
The one whose heart is more sorrowful shall prevail.
