گفتارم،
بسی آسان به پندار آید،
و بسی آسان به کردار؛
اما در جهان کسی نیست،
که آن را بداند یا به کار بندد.

با آن‌که گفتارم پیشین است،
و کردارم پیشوا؛
مردمانش درنیابند،
و به کارش نبندند؛

از آن‌رو که سرشتِ راستین را نمی‌جویند،
مرا نیز نمی‌یابند.

آن‌که مرا می‌شناسد، اندک‌است؛
و آن‌که از من پیروی کند، گرامی‌ست.

و این‌گونه است که فرزانه،
گوهری در درون دارد،
و جامه‌ای از فروتنی در بیرون.

The Seventieth Notebook

My words
seem very easy to understand,
and very easy to put into practice;
yet in all the world there is no one
who truly knows them or puts them into practice.

Although my words are ancient,
and my actions lead the way,
people do not understand them,
nor do they put them into practice,

because they do not seek Fundamental Nature;
therefore, they do not find me.

Those who know me are few;
and those who follow me are honored.

And thus it is that the sage
carries a jewel within,
and wears a garment of humility without.
