اگر مردمان از نفسِ بدکنش نهراسند،
هراسی بنیادین بر آنان چیره گردد.

اگر از زیستِ خود خشنود باشند،
دل‌هایشان آرامش یابد،
و آشتی فراگیر شود.

از این‌رو، رهبر شایسته
بر مردمان تنگ نمی‌گیرد،
و زیستِ آنان را تلخ نمی‌سازد؛
تا مردمان نومید و بیزار نگردند.

رهبرِ فرزانه:
خود را می‌شناسد،اما نمی‌نمایاند؛
خویشتن را دوست می‌دارد، اما نمی‌ستاید.

خودبزرگ‌بینی را فرو می‌گذارد،
و فروتنی را در بر می‌گیرد.

The Seventy-Second Notebook

If the people do not fear the unruly self,
a fundamental fear will overcome them.

If they are content with their way of living,
their hearts will find peace,
and harmony will prevail.

Therefore, the worthy leader
does not constrain the people,
nor make their lives bitter,
so that they do not become hopeless and resentful.

The sage leader
knows himself, yet does not display himself;
loves himself, yet does not exalt himself.

He casts away self-aggrandizement
and embraces humility.
