اگر مردمان از پوشیدگیِ سرشتِ راستین نهراسند،
هراسِ نفسِ بدکنش بر آنان چیره خواهد شد.

رهبر باید
که بر مردمان تنگ نگیرد
و روزیِ آنان را فراخ نماید؛
آنگاه مردمان نومید و بیزار نگردند.

از این رو رهبرِ فرزانه
خود را می‌شناسد،
اما خود را نمی‌نمایاند؛
خویشتن را دوست می‌دارد،
اما خود را نمی‌ستاید.

پس خودبزرگ‌بینی فرو می‌گذارد
و فروتنی را در بر می‌گیرد.

Notebook Seventy Two
If the people do not fear the concealment of the Righteous Nature,
The terror of the evil natured self will overcome them.

The leader must
Not constrict the people,
And make their livelihood abundant,
Then the people shall not become despairing and repulsed.

Therefore the wise leader
Knows himself,
But does not display himself;
Cherishes himself,
But does not exalt himself.

Thus he sets aside self-aggrandizement
And embraces humility.
