اگر مردمان از مرگ نهراسند،
جان‌ستاندن را چه‌سود؟

اگر مردمان از مرگ بهراسند،
بزه‌ از میان برخیزد.

مردمان به‌ناچار چشنده‌ی مرگ‌اند،
پس حاکم، مرگ را بر آنان نچشاند.

اگر حاکم، مرگ را به مردمان بچشاند،
بسا که راهِ نادرست بپیماید؛
چشاندنِ مرگ، به آیینِ خویش روان است،
و حاکمِ فرزانه آن‌را دست‌کاری نمی‌کند.

The Seventy-Fourth Notebook

If the people do not fear death,
what purpose is there in taking life?

If the people fear death,
wrongdoing will cease.

The people are bound, in the end, to taste death;
therefore, the ruler should not make them taste death.

If the ruler makes the people taste death,
he may well take the wrong path;
the giving of death proceeds according to its own order,
and the sage ruler does not interfere with it.
