مردمان بی‌نوا‌یند،
زیرا دولت‌ها مالیات و عوارضِ گزاف می‌ستانند؛
از این‌رو تهی‌دست‌اند.

مردمان به دشواری اداره می‌شوند،
زیرا دولت‌ها در زندگانیِ آنان فراوان دست‌اندازی می‌کنند؛
از این‌رو به دشواری اداره می‌شوند.

مردمان مرگِ خود را سبک می‌شمارند،
زیرا دولت‌ها فراوان فربه‌ شده‌اند؛
از این‌رو مرگ را سبک می‌شمارند.

پس آن‌که به زیستن آزمند نیست،
از آن‌که به زندگی می‌آویزد برتر است.

The people are impoverished,
because governments levy excessive taxes and dues;
therefore they are left destitute.

The people are difficult to govern,
because governments intrude too deeply into their lives;
therefore they are difficult to govern.

The people take their own deaths lightly,
because governments have grown excessively bloated;
therefore they take death lightly.

Thus, the one who is not greedy for life
is superior to the one who clings to it.
