انسان در هنگامِ زادن نرم و سُست است،
و در هنگامِ مردن سخت و سفت.

گیاهان در آغاز نرم و تازه اند،
و در پایان خشک و شکننده.

از این‌رو، ای بسا سپاهِ بسیار زورمند که پیروز نگردد،
و ای بسا درختِ سخت که شکسته شود.

آن‌چه سخت و نیرومند است به زیر می‌افتد،
و آن‌چه نرم و تازه است بالا می‌گیرد.

پس، سختی و سفتی از نشانه‌های نفسِ بدکنش است،
و نرمی و تازگی از نشانه‌های سرشتِ بنیادین.

Notebook Seventy-Six
A human being, at birth, is soft and yielding;
at death, hard and rigid.

Plants, in their beginning, are tender and fresh;
in their end, dry and brittle.

Thus, even a greatly powerful army may fail to prevail,
and even a rigid tree may be broken.

What is hard and forceful falls downward;
what is soft and fresh rises upward.

Thus, hardness and rigidity are signs of the ill-acting self,
while softness and freshness are signs of the original nature.
