فروتنی، نشانِ سرشتِ بنیادین است؛
می‌رویاند و برمی‌کشد،
چنان‌که باران بر دشت ببارد.

چیرگی، نشانِ نفسِ بدکنش است؛
می‌خشکاند و فرومی‌افکند،
چنان‌که آتش بر خشک افتد.

راهِ آسمان، از چیرگان می‌ستاند و به فروتنان می‌بخشد؛
اما راهِ مردمان جز این است:
از فروتنان می‌گیرند و به چیره‌گران می‌دهند.

چه کسی از والاییِ خویش به دیگران می‌بخشد؟
جز آن‌که با راه هم‌راه است.

پس فرزانه دهش می‌کند، بی‌آن‌که در بندِ آن شود؛
کار را به پایان می‌برد، بی‌آن‌که در آن بماند؛
و برتریِ خود را نمی‌نمایاند.

The Seventy-Seventh Notebook

Humility is the sign of Fundamental Nature;
it brings forth and lifts upward,
as rain falls upon the plain.

Dominance is the sign of the unruly self;
it withers and casts down,
as fire consumes what is dry.

The Way of Heaven takes from those who have excess
and gives to those who are humble;
but the way of the people is otherwise:
they take from the humble
and give to those who dominate.

Who, then, gives of his own eminence to others,
except one who walks in accord with the Way?

Thus the sage gives without becoming bound to his gift;
brings his work to completion without remaining in it;
and does not display his superiority.
