فروتنی از سرشتِ بنیادین است،
می‌روید و بالا می‌رود.
چنان‌که بر دشت باران ببارد.

چیرگی از نفسِ بدکنش است،
می‌خشکد و فرو می‌افتد،
چنان‌که بر خشک آتش افتد.

راهِ آسمان از چیرگان می‌ستاند و به فروتنان می‌بخشد،
اما راهِ مردمان جز این است:
از فروتنان می‌گیرند و به چیره‌گران می‌دهند.

چه کسی از والایی خویش به دیگران می‌بخشد؟
جز آن‌که با راه هم‌راه است.

پس فرزانه کار می‌کند بی‌آن‌که در بند آن شود،
کار را به پایان می‌برد بی‌آن‌که در آن بماند،
و در پیِ نمودنِ خویش نیست.

Notebook Seventy-Seven
The humble belongs to the original nature:
it grows and rises,
as rain falls upon the plain.

Dominance issues from the ill-acting self:
it withers and falls away,
as fire falls upon the dry.

The Way of Heaven takes from the dominant
and bestows upon the humble;
but the way of men is otherwise:
they take from the humble
and give to the dominant.

Who can offer their own abundance to others?
Only the one who walks with the Way.

Thus the sage acts without being bound by his action,
brings his work to completion without remaining in it,
and does not seek to display himself.
