اما در فرسودنِ سنگ، کارآمدترین است.

از این‌رو، نرم‌خو بر تندخو،
و نرم بر سفت چیره می‌شود؛

مردمان این را می‌دانند،
اما به کار نمی‌بندند.

فرزانه با فروتنی رنجِ مردمان را بر خود هموار می‌کند؛
اندوهِ کشور را بر دوش می‌کشد؛
و شکوفاییِ سرشتِ بنیادین را بنیاد می‌نهد.
پس پناهِ مردمان، و پادشاهِ دل‌ها می‌گردد.

سخنِ راست، وارونه می‌نماید.

In the world, water is the softest of all things;
yet in wearing down stone, it is the most effective.

Therefore, the gentle prevail over the harsh,
and the soft prevail over the rigid;

people know this,
yet they do not put it into practice.

The sage, with humility, takes the suffering of the people upon himself;
he bears the sorrow of the nation upon his shoulders;
and lays the foundation for the flourishing of Fundamental Nature.
Thus he becomes the refuge of the people,
and the king of hearts.
