در آشتی‌های بزرگ نیز کینه‌ای خرد پنهان است؛
چگونه می‌توان این را نیک شمرد؟
از این‌رو فرزانه، پیمان را پاس می‌دارد،
اما دشمنی نمی‌ورزد.

هژ راه رو، پیمان را ارج می‌نهد،
اما بر وام‌دار تنگ نمی‌گیرد؛
ولی گم‌راه، از پیمان بهره‌یِ خویش می‌جوید.

سرشتِ راستین آرام است،
و نفسِ بدکنش در تکاپو.

راه، بی‌پیرایه،
یارِ نیکان است.

The Seventy-Ninth Notebook

Even in great reconciliations, a small resentment may remain hidden;
how, then, can this be deemed good?
Therefore, the sage honors the covenant,
but does not engage in enmity.

The one who walks with the Way honors the covenant,
but does not press the debtor;
while the one who has strayed from the Way seeks his own advantage from the covenant.

Fundamental Nature is at peace,
while the unruly self is in restless pursuit.
