سخن راست همیشه خوشایند نیست،
و سخن خوشایند همیشه راست نیست.
نیکان ستیزه نمی‌کنند،
و ستیزه‌جویان نیکوکار نیستند.
دانایان بسیار گو نیستند،
و بسیار گویان دانا نیستند.

فرزانه نمی‌اندوزد؛
هرچه بیشتر می‌بخشد، فزون‌تر می‌شود،
و بی‌نیازتر می‌گردد.

سرشتِ بنیادین سود می‌رساند و زیان نمی‌زند.
راهِ فرزانه کار می‌کند و نمی‌ستیزد.

Notebook Eighty-One

True words are not always pleasing,
and pleasing words are not always true.
The good do not contend,
and those who contend are not good.
Those who know are not given to much speech,
and those given to much speech do not truly know.

The sage does not accumulate;
the more he gives, the more he becomes,
and the more he is freed from need.

The fundamental nature benefits and does not harm.
The way of the sage acts and does not contend.
