سرشتِ راستینِ انسان؛
بنیادِ رازآمیزِ دائو است؛
دیده نمی‌شود؛
شنیده نمی‌شود؛
بساویده نمی‌شود.
سرشتِ راستین؛
نه بالا است و نه پائین،
نه پیش است و نه پس،
نه تاریک است و نه روشن؛
بی‌گونه است و بی‌نام.
سرشتِ راستین؛
ژرف است و بی‌کران؛
پژوهیده نمی‌شود؛
نشانِ بی‌نشان است و پاینده.
سرشتِ راستین؛ همه‌ است، هیچ است، ریشه است، یک است.
سرشتِ راستین؛ مهرآفرین است، توانا و بی‌کُنش است.
بی‌آغاز است و بی‌پایان، بیرون از زمان و مکان.
چون نفسِ بدکنش پالوده شود، سرشتِ راستینِ انسان تابان می‌گردد.

Notebook Fourteen
The true nature of the human being
is the mysterious ground of the Tao.
It cannot be seen;
it cannot be heard;
it cannot be grasped.
The true nature is
neither above nor below,
neither before nor after,
neither dark nor bright;
formless and without a name.
The true nature is
profound and boundless, beyond inquiry;
a sign without a sign, enduring.
The true nature is all that is,
and yet nothing;
it is the root,
it is the One.
The true nature is the quiet source of compassion,
powerful, and without force.
Without beginning and without end,
beyond time and space.
When the distorted self is purified,
the true nature of the human being shines forth.
