اگر نفسِ بدکنش مهار نگردد،
سرشتِ راستین، هویدا نشود،
و آن‌گاه دائوی بزرگ از یاد برود.

اگر یگانه‌ی سرشتِ راستین، از یاد برود،
آن‌گاه دوگانه‌ی خیر و شرّ در میان آید.
و چون آن دوگانه در میان آمد،
پس نیرنگِ بزرگ پدیدار شود.

اگر در خانواده، یگانگی از میان برخیزد،
آن‌گاه پسرانِ شایسته و ناشایست، پدیدار شود.

اگر رهبر به گفتار و کردار آید،
آن‌گاه کارگزارانِ خودی و بی‌گانه رُخ نماید.
پس کشور بی‌سامان شود،

When the ill-acting ego is not held in check,
True nature does not reveal itself,
And the great Tao is forgotten.

When the One of true nature is forgotten,
Then the duality of good and evil comes forth.

When duality comes forth,
Then great hypocrisy emerges.

In the family, when unity departs,
Then worthy and unworthy sons appear.

When the leader steps into word and deed,
Chaos arises,
Then loyal and faithless ministers reveal themselves.
