بگذار مردمان به سرشتِ راستینِ خویش بازگردند؛
آنگاه دادگری، مهربانی و درست‌کرداری خود پدیدار می‌شود.

بگذار سرشتِ بنیادینِ مردمان آشکار گردد؛
آنگاه زیرکی و سودجویی به دزدی و نیرنگ نمی‌انجامد.

خردورزی، نیک‌خواهی، زیرکی و سودجویی را،
چون نفسِ بدکنش بر آن‌ها چیره شود،
به دور افکن.

به اصل و ریشه بازگرد؛
به سرشتِ بنیادین و دائو بیاویز؛
کندهٔ ناتراشیده باش.

آنگاه خودخواهی، آزمندی و ستمکاری
فرو می‌نشیند.

Notebook Nineteen
Let the people return to their true nature;
then justice, kindness, and right conduct
will arise of themselves.
Let the fundamental nature of the people be revealed;
then cunning and profit-seeking
will not descend into theft and deceit.
Cast away wisdom, benevolence, cunning, and gain
when the ill-acting ego
comes to dominate them.
Return to the source and the root;
cling to the fundamental nature and the Dao;
be as the uncarved block.
Then selfishness, greed, and cruelty
will subside.
