فروتن، والاتبار است.
نرم‌خو و خمیده است،
پس راست می‌شود.

تهی از نفسِ بدکنش،
با مهربانی پُر می‌شود.

سرشتِ بنیادین، دیرینه است،
اما جوانه می‌گردد.

بخشایش، فزاینده است.
اما بسیار خواهی، کاهنده می‌گردد.

از این‌رو فرزانه، در سرشتِ راستین ماندگار می‌شود.
اما برای مردمان نمونه می‌گردد.

او خودنما نیست،
پس نامور می‌شود.

فریب‌کار نیست،
پس می‌درخشد.

خودستا نیست،
پس ستوده می‌شود.

سرافراز نیست،
پس رهبر می‌شود.

ستیزه‌جو نیست،
پس نافرمانی نمی‌شود.

پس این سخن دیرینه که:
"فروتن؛ والاتبار است"،
یاوه نیست.

سرشتِ راستینِ انسانِ فرزانه،
متجلی گردیده است.

Notebook Twenty-Two

The humble are of noble stature.
Gentle and yielding,
they are thereby made straight.

Empty of the ill-acting ego,
they are filled with kindness.

The fundamental nature is ancient,
yet ever it renews itself.

Generosity increases and overflows,
while excessive desire diminishes and decays.

Thus the sage abides
in the true nature,
and becomes an example for the people.

He does not display himself,
and thus becomes renowned.

He is without deceit,
and thus shines forth.

He does not praise himself,
and thus is praised by others.

He is not arrogant,
and thus becomes a leader.

He is not contentious,
and thus none rise in defiance against him.

Therefore the ancient saying,
“The humble are of noble stature,”
is no empty phrase.

For the true nature of the sage
has revealed itself.
