سکوت، گویاترین سخنِ طبیعت است.

توفان و رگبار
دیری نمی‌پایند؛
پس طبیعت
کم سخن می‌گوید.

از این‌رو فرزانه
کم می‌گوید
و تند نمی‌گوید.

بسیارگویان
یاوه‌گو می‌شوند.

پس با سکوت و سخنِ کوتاه،
باید با سرشتِ بنیادین هم‌راه شد؛
تا خود راه شد.

آن‌که از راه دور شود،
گم می‌شود؛
و آن‌که با راه بماند،
فره‌‌مند می‌گردد.

چون راستی از میان برود،
بی‌اعتمادی پدیدار می‌شود.

Notebook Twenty-Three

Silence is Nature’s most eloquent speech.

Storm and heavy rain do not endure for long; thus Nature speaks but little.

Therefore the sage speaks little and never with harshness.

Those who speak excessively become speakers of empty words.

Thus, through silence and few words, one must walk in accord with the fundamental nature, until one becomes the Way itself.

Whoever strays from the Way is lost; and whoever abides with the Way becomes illumined with grace.

When truth disappears from among men, distrust arises.
