بر پنجه‌ ایستاده،
بلندبالا نیست.

گامِ بلند،
به مقصد رسیدن نیست.

خودنما،
تابنده‌ نیست.
و خودنمایان،
نامدار نیستند.

خودستا،
شکوه‌مند نیست.
و خودستایان،
بالنده نیستند.

نفسِ بدکنش،
زبان‌آور، خودنما و خودستا است؛
زیان‌آور می‌آفریند
و بیزاری می‌انگیزد.

سرشتِ بنیادین،
بی‌سخن، تابنده و شکوه‌مند است؛
ریشه است
و هم‌راهِ دائو.

چون نفسِ بدکنش مهار شود،
سرشتِ بنیادین
نمایان می‌شود.

Notebook Twenty-Four

One who stands on tiptoe
is not truly tall.

A long stride
is not the same as reaching the destination.

The self-
are not radiant;
and those who seek to display themselves
do not become renowned.

The self-praising
are not glorious;
and those who praise themselves
do not flourish.

The ill-acting ego
is eloquent, self-displaying, and self-praising;
it brings forth harm
and stirs aversion.

The fundamental nature
is silent, radiant, and full of dignity;
it is the root
and walks in accord with the Dao.

When the ill-acting ego is restrained,
the fundamental nature
reveals itself
