جهان جامی‌ست راز‌آمیز؛
هرآن‌که آرزو کند آن را به چنگ آورد،
ناگزیر ناکام می‌ماند.

سرشتِ هستی چنین است:
برخی پیش‌آهنگ‌‌اند و برخی پیرو؛
برخی نرم و آرام‌‌‌اند و برخی تند و شتابان؛
برخی در فرازند و برخی در فرودند.

از این‌رو فرزانه
دستکاری نمی‌کند، پس تباه نمی‌سازد؛
به چنگ نمی‌آورد؛ پس از دست نمی‌دهد؛
فزون‌خواهی را رها می‌کند و خودبزرگ‌بینی را از دل می‌‌زداید.

Notebook Twenty-Nine

The world is a mysterious vessel;
therefore, whenever one desires to seize the world,
one will inevitably fail.

Such is the nature of existence:
some lead and some follow;
some are gentle and calm,
and some are swift and impetuous;
some rise high,
and some remain low.

Therefore, the sage
dwells in non-action,
and thus does not bring ruin;

he does not grasp,
and thus does not lose.

He lets go of excess desire,
and removes self-exaltation from the heart.
