کار که با سرشتِ بنیادین هم‌راه نباشد،
به بیهودگی می‌انجامد؛

از این‌رو
رهبر از ریشه پیروی می‌کند.

سلاح و ستم‌کاری پیامدها دارند؛
هرجا سپاهیان گردآیند،
آشوب به بار می‌آید.

جنگ‌ها مردمان را سوگوار،
تنگدست و رنجور می‌سازد.

از این‌رو
سردار شایسته پس از پیروزی،
جنگ را پایان می‌دهد و درنگ می‌کند؛

خودستایی نمی‌کند؛
خودبین نمی‌شود؛
خودپرست نمی‌شود؛
سنگدل و ستمکار نمی‌گردد.

او سرنگونیِ سرافراز‌ان را به یاد می‌آورد؛
می‌داند هرچه با سرشتِ راستین هم‌راه نباشد،
دیری نمی‌پاید.

Notebook Thirty
Any action that is not in harmony with Fundamental Nature
leads to futility;

therefore,
the leader follows the Root.

Weapons and oppression
bring their own consequences;
wherever armies gather,
chaos arises.

Wars leave people mourning,
impoverished, and suffering.

Therefore,
the worthy commander, after victory,
brings war to an end and remains restrained;

he does not boast;
he does not become arrogant;
he does not become self-serving;
he does not become harsh or oppressive.

He remembers the downfall of the proud;

for whatever is not in harmony with the True Nature
does not endure for long.
