برترین جنگافزار،
شومترین ابزار است؛
و سرشتِ بنیادینِ مردمان
از آن گریزان است.
حاکمِ فرزانه
آرزومند کاربردِ آن نیست،
و از به کارگیری آن اندوهگین میشود.
پیروزی از راه جنگ
هرگز خجسته نیست؛
آنکه از پیروزی در جنگ شادمان میشود،
از کشتنِ مردمان شادی میکند؛
و آنکه از رنج و کشتنِ مردمان شاد شود،
از سرشتِ بنیادینِ خود دور افتاده است؛
و روزگار بر او ناخجسته خواهد گشت.
از اینرو، چون جنگ ناگزیر شود،
فرزانه، با درنگ و اندوه
تن به آن میدهد.
پیروزی برای او
جشن و شکوه نیست،
که سوگواری است.

The Thirty-First Notebook
The finest weapons
are the most ominous of instruments;
and the nature of the people
turns away from them.
The Sage ruler
has no desire to employ them,
and is grieved when he must use them.
Victory through war
is never auspicious;
one who rejoices in victory through war
rejoices in the killing of people.
And one who takes joy
in the suffering and killing of people
has strayed from Fundamental Nature;
soon, the course of things
will turn against him.
Therefore, when war becomes unavoidable,
the Sage submits to it
with restraint and sorrow.
For him, victory
is no occasion for celebration or glory;
it is mourning.
