دائو بزرگ است و سرشتِ راستینِ انسان از اوست؛
راهِ بی‌کرانه است؛
به هر سو رو کنی، او همان‌جا است.

بی‌نام است و هستی از او آغاز می‌شود؛
خودنمایی ندارد.

هر روز در کاری است و مزدی نمی‌طلبد؛
می‌پروراند، می‌پوشاند،
اما فرمان نمی‌دهد.

نه اربابِ مردمان است، نه مردمان برده اویند؛
بی‌ خواسته است و فروتن،
پس به چشم نمی‌آید.

بازگشتِ همه به سویِ اوست و داوری نمی‌کند؛
پس بزرگ است.

آن‌که بزرگیِ خویش را نمی‌داند،
به راستی بزرگ است.

The Thirty-Fourth Notebook

The Dao is great, and the Fundamental Nature of humanity is from it;
it is the boundless Way;
turn wherever you will, and there it is.

Nameless, it is the source from which existence arises;
it makes no display of itself.

Every day it is at work, asking no reward;
it nurtures and shelters,
yet it does not command.

It is neither lord of the people, nor are the people its slaves;
without desire and humble,
it therefore remains unseen.

All things return to it, and it passes no judgment;
therefore, it is great.

Whoever does not know his own greatness
is truly great.
