The Thirty-Ninth Notebook
In the beginning, Being was One; it was the Unity.
Heaven found its radiance through it;
Earth found its stillness through it;
the valleys were filled through it;
the spirit, through it, became Fundamental Nature;
and kings and sages, through it,
became those who bring the world into order—
not through command, but through harmony with the One.
If Heaven did not receive its radiance, it would fall;
if Earth did not find its stillness, it would crumble;
if its spirit did not embody Fundamental Nature, its splendour would be lost.
Thus, the One is the source of stability and wisdom;
and greatness has its roots in humility.
Therefore, the king and the sage regard themselves as solitary and powerless.
Is this humility not greatness?
When rain falls, it hastens from the heights of the mountains
toward the valley.
To remain an uncarved block is more fitting.
