The Forty-First NotebookThe Forty-First Notebook
When the sage hears the call of Fundamental Nature,
he listens with his whole being, in profound silence;
he has found the Way.
When the clever hear Fundamental Nature speak to them,
they find it, then forget it;
they wander midway along the Way.
When the ignorant hear Truth call out to them,
they mock it;
they have lost the Way.
The mockery of the ignorant
is a testimony to the Way.
In the eyes of the people:
truth appears inverted;
the bright Way appears dark;
the highest ideal appears unattainable;
the straight Way appears difficult;
great virtue appears like an empty valley;
purest whiteness appears black;
abundant sound appears impoverished;
steadfastness appears unsteady;
and unadorned truth appears defiled.
Thus, what is true lies beyond appearances.
The great square appears without corners;
the vessel of Being is difficult to apprehend;
the sound of creation is heard in silence;
the face of Being is without a face.
The Dao is hidden and nameless;
yet it nourishes and brings all things to fullness.
