در آغاز، یگانه‌ی بی‌نام، در نیست، یک را آفرید؛
و یک، دو را زاد؛
و دو، سه را؛
و سه، هزاران هزار آفریده را زاد.

هستی، نیستی را در پشتِ سر؛
و روشنایی را در پیشِ رو دارد؛
و با یادِ یگانه‌ی بی‌نام،
آرامش می‌یابد؛
بی‌اندرز و بی‌فرمان.

مردمان از تنهایی، بی‌پناهی و ناداری گریزان‌اند؛
اما شاهان و فرزانگان
به تنهایی، بی‌پناهی و ناداری می‌بالند.

فروتنی و مهربانی، فزونی‌آفرین‌اند؛
و خودخواهی و ستمکاری، کاستی‌آفرین.

آموختم که زورمداران و ستمکاران
مرگِ نیکو ندارند؛
پس این را پایهٔ آموزشِ خویش ساخته‌ام.

The Forty-Second Notebook

In the beginning, the Nameless One, in Non-Being, brought forth the One;
and the One gave birth to Two;
and Two to Three; and Three gave birth to the myriad beings.

Being bears Non-Being behind it,
and Light before it;
and in remembrance of the Nameless One,
it finds stillness,
without counsel and without command.

People shrink from solitude, helplessness, and poverty;
yet kings and sages
take pride in solitude, helplessness, and poverty.

Humility and kindness bring increase;
selfishness and oppression bring decrease.

I have learned that the forceful and the oppressive
do not meet a good death;
therefore, I have made this
the foundation of my teaching.
