آوازه و آرامش،
کدامین را گرامی‌ می‌داری؟
آرامش و آرایش،
کدامین را ارج می‌نهی؟
به‌دست آوردن یا از دست دادن،
کدام زیان‌بارتر است؟

از این‌رو، دلبستگی هزینه‌ای گران دارد؛
و آن‌که بسیار اندوزد، فراوان پردازد.

آن‌که بسنده کند، سرافکنده نگردد؛
و آن‌که به‌هنگام بازایستد، بی‌گزند ماند.

آن‌که با سرشت بماند، پایداری یابد و جاودان گردد؛
و آنکه در حواس بماند، زیان بیند
و زودا که تباه شود.

The Forty-Fourth Notebook

Fame or tranquility—
which do you cherish?

Tranquility or adornment—
which do you esteem?

Gaining or losing—
which is more harmful?

Therefore, attachment comes at a great cost;
and whoever accumulates much, pays dearly.

Whoever knows when enough is enough will not be disgraced;
and whoever knows when to stop will remain unharmed.

Whoever abides with Fundamental Nature gains endurance and becomes eternal;
but whoever remains bound to the senses will suffer loss,
and before long will perish.
