آنگاه که سرشتِ راستین در جهان بتابد،
سازوبرگِ نبرد، به آبادانی و کارِ مردمان بازگردد؛

و آنگاه که سرشتِ بنیادین از یاد‌ها برود،
سازوبرگ و مردمان، به مرزها گسیل می‌گردد.

هیچ گزندی، بزرگ‌تر از ناخشنودی نیست؛
و هیچ شرنگی، چون افزون‌خواهی نیست.

پس، آن‌که بسندگی را می‌شناسد،
آرامشِ بی‌کران را می‌یابد؛
و آنان‌که در آرامشِ بی‌کران‌اند،
از غوغایِ جنگ و اندوهِ تهی‌دستی در امان می‌مانند.

The Forty-Sixth Notebook

When Fundamental Nature shines forth in the world,
the instruments of war return to the cultivation of the land and the work of the people;

and when Fundamental Nature is forgotten,
weapons and people are sent to the frontiers.

There is no greater affliction than discontent;
and no greater poison than insatiable desire.

Therefore, whoever knows sufficiency
finds boundless tranquility;
and those who abide in boundless tranquility
remain beyond the turmoil of war and the sorrow of poverty.
